Cleaning crucibles is essential to maintaining a contaminant free work environment. Often used in ashing and other chemical applications it can be easy for residue to settle on the bottom of crucibles. Whether you are using porcelain, quartz, high-alumnia, platinum or nickel, your crucible will need to be properly cleaned and maintained to continue to serve you well in your applications. Different metals of course require different levels of maintenance. Cleaning crucibles that are platinum require filing them with fused bicarbonate and then boiling them in diluted hydrochloric acid, to remove residue. Cleaning crucibles that are porcelain however just requires the first step, rinse with hot water and clean dry cloth to sweep away the wetness. Though crucibles used in biochemical or pharmaceutical work benefit from sulfuric-nitrate cleaning solutions. Cleaning crucibles need not be difficult but it should be routine.
